One of our family favorites is an improvement on the ‘Swiss Steak” I had as a kid (sorry mom!). Instead of chopped steak I would buy premium beef patties and prepare them stovetop, add gravy and serve with mashed potatoes.  Now, I serve a tastier AND healthier version!  I prepare turkey burgers stovetop, and make a healthier, tastier au jus, instead of fattening gravy.

Ingredients:

Turkey burgers (or homemade patties, using ground turkey and whatever spices you like)

Beef bouillon

Water

A1 sauce

Reduced fat Swiss cheese (or your choice)

Mushrooms, optional

Sear burgers on each side for 2-3 minutes in lightly oiled pan. Add 1/2 cup to 1 cup of water and bouillon cubes or powder. Simmer for about 15 min. Top each burger with a tablespoon of A1 Sauce, and drizzle a little around the burgers.  Place mushrooms in the center of the pan or around the burgers.  Simmer 5 min. longer. Top with cheese and remove from heat.

For the ‘mashed potatoes’ we love to serve with this dish, cook fresh cauliflower in a bit of water until tender. Add salt, pepper and butter to taste.  You can mash or leave in tact, but drizzle with the pan gravy-Tasty!!

Tomorrow we will check out a healthy replacement for favorite-Homemade Spaghetti with Sauce!

Until then, be well!
