Why do you need a personal trainer? The answer is simple-accountability. I realize this word sometimes seems to carry a negative connotation. However, if we are honest, it really shouldn’t. Being accountable to someone or something moves us forward, and progress is good for everyone. Setting goals is a good idea, so much so, we celebrate this practice every January-it’s called ‘making New Year’s Resolutions’.

In the area of physical fitness, accountability can be achieved in a variety of ways. A common practice is to keep an exercise journal but the simplicity of this tool can be a detriment. It might keep good track of your exercise habits however, it doesn’t address the other important aspects such as eating, sleeping , and general health habits, which contribute to the success of your fitness goals. It also lacks the all-important human aspect. It doesn’t have personality, its motivational power is one dimensional, and it can’t call and check on you!

Programs like ‘The Biggest Loser” and “Weight Watchers” lend support to the theory that accountability is the key. Both have shown that success is tied directly to some form of accountability. The problem is, not many of us will be chosen for the TV program and for others Weight Watchers may not be a feasible option either. One thing these programs have in common is that they employ coaches. This is where the option of a personal trainer enters in. A personal trainer can provide the multi-dimensional approach necessary for long-term physical fitness. A good trainer will help you assess the various aspects of your physical health, including your exercise, eating, sleeping and general health habits. They should focus on what your goals are so they can apply their knowledge of good practices in a way that is helpful and practical for you as an individual. One size does not fit all when it comes to being physically fit.

Additionally, a personal trainer is a better motivator than that piece of paper. That’s why I would like to encourage you to contact me, Your Best Fitness Friend (Your BFF), so we can work together toward achieving your personal fitness goals.
