Ok, I admit it-getting back on track with food and fitness habits after a (favorite) holiday and a ‘significant’ birthday celebration is NOT as easy as the old adage about learning to ride a bike. It can be very difficult! I think we have to start by admitting that overdoing it with our food choices is a human condition and nobody is perfect. We all have our moments. The main thing is to not allow ourselves to feel defeated by them. Remember- our mistakes do not define us, but our responses to them. This is true for life in general and certainly applies here.
Part of creating good habits is realizing the importance of re-adjustment. We often view a compromise in practicing a good habit as a failure. This is so not true! We need to recognize that the manifestation of good habits may look different at different times in life or under different circumstances (which change constantly). If we forget to do something we thought we had made into a habit-no biggie! Just implement some strategies, such as reminders, to help you keep the promises you make to yourself. Part of creating (and keeping) good habits is recognizing that they may need to be fluid, rather than rigid for them to have the most impact, long-term, on our lives.
The response I would propose is that ‘practice makes perfect’ (another old saying) and we should be practicing healthy habits. When we practice something, we get better at it, and most of us make improvements. That is what it is all about! In this life, we will never achieve perfection, but striving every day to make improvements will result in better health in all those special areas we have talked about- the Social, Physical, Intellectual, Culinary, Emotional, and Spiritual aspects of life. So, flavor your life with some SPICES! Get back on that proverbial (healthy habit) bicycle and keep pedaling-you will be surprised at how quickly you get back in the race!
I will be trying to catch up! Be well!
