A great question from a follower:
Q.: Hi Suzy,
Today is day 9 of the SB [South Beach Diet] phase 1 and I’m down over 11 pounds. Crazy! 🙂 I have a question. Do you recommend staying on phase 1 longer than the two weeks? I was thinking of staying on it. I’m feeling so good! My goal this week is to get a lot of exercise in all week!
Ok, thanks again. I hope you don’t mind the questions. Have a great day! 🙂

M.E.-good to hear from you! First, congratulations! Nice work!! Secondly, I do not mind at all-I just want to be a resource and encouragement whenever I can. As for remaining on Phase one-to be honest, I think most people should and can stay on phase one, here is why:
First, most of us don’t go full force from day one, because it can be really difficult to make such a drastic change, so it takes us the first week or so to really commit. This isn’t always the case-and it sounds like you really committed from the start (awesome!), but I would say that two weeks is not quite long enough to get grounded. It helps us clean things up and gets us going. Secondly, I think by the time we reach the 14th day, we are feeling good and cruising along on the phase, having overcome the difficulties of weaning ourselves off of sugar and (bad) carbs. And thirdly, most real people I know on this food plan all stayed on it longer than two weeks. My husband and I barely budged off phase one for about three months. Now, that doesn’t work for everyone, but it was good for us. I still use mostly South Beach recipes and “skinny” everything else up. He lost 80 lbs, I lost 35 initially and am down a total of 50 lbs-we started all this 10 years ago. I would say to be careful about staying on really long (3 months is about the max) and also, be conscious of your calorie intake-make sure it is enough-most people make the mistake of not eating enough. Look into how many calories you should have for your size. I do not stress calories or calorie counting with my clients, other than to have a healthy and reasonable guideline, and I always say-don’t count calories, just make THEM count. Meaning-eat good food! I hope this helps! Thanks for keeping me posted and allowing me to be part of your journey! Be well, make good choices-Your Best Fitness Friend
