Ha! I thought maybe I would get some attention with that! It isn’t what you think, but the statement has been true for me recently. While on vacation last week, I ‘tweaked’ my knee. It is better now, but I had quite a bit of pain at one time, had to spend time in doctor’s offices, had to move clients’ sessions around, and couldn’t work out. This week, my knee feels better, the doctors made some money, and my clients were very understanding. As for the workouts, well, that is where the rub lies. You see, I really enjoy exercise, in whatever form, at whatever intensity. I am fortunate that I have been able to carve out time for exercise without too much difficulty. In other words, I have taken these things for granted! The biggest (and only real) benefit of my injury has been time.
This extra time has allowed me to think, read, think some more, and ultimately come to a new understanding of, and appreciation for, some of the difficulties people (my clients) have in planning for and sticking to better choices for healthier lifestyles. Since the doctor advised me to take the week off from the gym, I just tried to do a bit at home. It was really tough! I had a hard time just getting started (all the excuses) and then sticking to it for a couple of hours with all the distractions-almost impossible!! This can definitely lead to a cycle of poor eating choices as well. Whether out of boredom, or easy access, avoiding the snacks can be difficult (it was for me). Then, at the end of the week, I felt unmotivated to exercise, even though my knee was feeling better, and my body was telling me I needed to get to the gym (crabbiness was setting in).
This all led me to an acknowledgement that being diligent in our choices to exercise and eat well is really hard!! Those of you who are committed to finding the time and means to eating well and exercising, (on top of your other responsibilities to home, work and family) you are my HEROES!! I now look at my clients with a new appreciation and understanding of what it takes for them to stick to their commitments. It makes me want to find more ways to support them.
This doesn’t mean I’m going to go easy on them! I’m just recognizing that we share in these struggles. Because we experience similar struggles, the way we approach and overcome these difficulties is consistent, too.
Here’s to minding your ‘Ps and Qs’-
Plan-You will be more likely to succeed if you have a plan and stick to it. Take time at the start of each week to plan your workout schedule and menus.
Partner-Having someone help keep you accountable is also imperative, a coach/trainer, or even a friend who will call or text you to remind you to get off your duff.
Psychology-Use whatever tactic: reverse psychology, rewards/punishment, self-talk, or self-affirmation; whatever it takes to get yourself to the gym or out of a sticky food situation.
Question-your motives. Why are you making decisions that don’t support your success?
Quash-the negative thoughts and remember that you are worth the effort!
Quit-procrastinating and get your gym bag and just GO already!
